How toCreate A Video Of Your Garmin Activity

Garmin Connect puts your ride or run on a map, but it doesn't make a video of it. What the activity page does have is a GPX export. Drop that file into AvoMap and you get a 3D flyover of the whole route as an MP4, in up to 4K.

See how it works
Step 1

Export The GPX From Garmin Connect

This only works on the website. The Garmin Connect app has no export button, so on a phone open connect.garmin.com in the browser instead.

  1. Open connect.garmin.com and sign in.

  2. In the menu on the left, go to Activities > All Activities.

  3. Click the activity you want as a video.

  4. Click the gear icon in the top right corner of the activity page.

  5. Choose Export to GPX. The file lands in your downloads folder.

The same menu offers "Export Original", which is a FIT file. AvoMap wants the GPX. If all you have is a FIT file from the watch, the free FIT file viewer turns it into GPX in your browser.

Step 2

Import The Activity Into AvoMap

  1. Open the AvoMap editor , or click Create Your Video in the bar at the top of this page.

  2. Click Select Your GPS File and choose the GPX from Garmin Connect. The route appears on the 3D map.

  3. Pick a map style, point the camera and set how long the video runs. Press Play to preview it.

  4. Click Create Video in the top right corner and let it render.

  5. Download the MP4.

Any Garmin, Any Sport

Anything that syncs to Garmin Connect exports the same way: Forerunner, Fenix, Edge, Venu, Instinct, the older Vivoactive. The GPX carries the track and the elevation the device recorded, so a mountain pass climbs in the video the way it did on the day. Rides, runs, hikes, ski days and open-water swims all have a track. Treadmill and trainer sessions don't, so there is nothing to draw.

If your Garmin also syncs to Strava, the Strava activity page has a GPX button too. Either file gives you the same video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Garmin Connect make a video of my activity?

No. Garmin Connect shows the route on a map and can share a still image with the stats on it, but it has no video or flyover feature. To get a video of a Garmin activity, export the GPX from connect.garmin.com and render it in AvoMap as a 3D flyover MP4.

How do I export a GPX file from Garmin Connect?

Sign in at connect.garmin.com, open Activities, then All Activities, and click the activity. Click the gear icon in the top right of the activity page and choose Export to GPX. The file downloads at once. This works on the website only; the Garmin Connect app has no export option.

Can I export GPX from the Garmin Connect app?

No. The Garmin Connect app has no export button on Android or iPhone. Open connect.garmin.com in the phone's browser instead: the website works on mobile and the gear menu with Export to GPX is there. The GPX then uploads to AvoMap from the same browser.

Which Garmin activities can be turned into a video?

Any activity with a GPS track: runs, rides, hikes, walks, open-water swims and ski days from any Garmin watch or Edge bike computer. Treadmill runs, trainer rides and pool swims have no track, so there is nothing to draw. The GPX carries the track and the elevation the device recorded.

Can I use the Garmin FIT file instead of GPX?

Not directly. Garmin's Export Original gives you the FIT file the watch recorded, and AvoMap imports GPX and KML. Use Export to GPX on the same menu, or convert a FIT file you already have with the free FIT file viewer on avomap.com, which runs in the browser and keeps the elevation.

How much does a video of a Garmin activity cost?

Previewing the activity in AvoMap is free, with every feature open. A finished 1080p MP4 costs one render credit, 4K costs two, and credits start at $9 for five videos. There is no subscription, and the GPX export from Garmin Connect is free.

No GPX at hand? AvoMap can also animate a route you draw in the editor.
