Life after Google Earth Pro
On July 8, 2026, Google announced that the Google Earth Pro desktop app won't be available for download after June 25, 2027. Installed copies keep working, but there will be no more updates or security patches. What you should switch to depends on what you used it for β here's an honest map of the options.
What's actually changing
- Until June 25, 2027: Google Earth Pro for Windows, macOS, and Linux stays downloadable. If you rely on it, grab the installer while you can.
- After that: existing installs keep running, with no updates, bug fixes, or security patches. Expect slow decay rather than a hard stop.
- Google's suggestion: migrate saved projects to Google Earth on web and mobile, which continue.
The right replacement depends on the job
GIS analysis & measurement
If you used the measuring, import, and analysis tools professionally, look at ArcGIS Earth (free desktop globe with GIS integration) or QGIS (free, open source, steeper learning curve). AvoMap is not a GIS tool and won't pretend to be.
Browsing satellite imagery
Google Earth on the web keeps the core exploring experience alive in the browser, historical imagery included. Zoom Earth is worth a look for near-real-time weather and satellite views.
KML routes & flyover videos
If you used "Record a Tour" to fly over routes and share them as videos, this is where AvoMap fits: upload the same KML or KMZ files and render a 3D flyover video in the browser, in up to 4K. That's the rest of this page.
Record a Tour, without the recording
Google Earth Pro's tour recorder captured your screen while you flew the route by hand. AvoMap renders the flyover for you: upload the KML, and the camera flies the track over 3D terrain automatically. You control angles, timing, and map style, then export a real video file instead of a screen capture.
