Why we process personal data

To provide our service

To start using AvoMap, you must sign up and create an account. During this process, we will ask you to provide certain information, including your name, email address, and an optional profile picture. This information is considered your "account data," and it is necessary for you to log in to AvoMap and personalize the service. If you sign up using your Facebook, Google, or WeChat account, we will collect certain information from your profile in order to create your AvoMap account. This information may include your name, profile picture, and email address. Please note that if you choose to cancel during the sign-up process, we will not be able to provide you with the AvoMap service, and we will not save any of the data you entered. We use your account data to personalize your experience on AvoMap and to communicate with you effectively.

By connecting a third-party provider, such as Garmin, you are giving AvoMap permission to access and store information from that provider on your behalf. This includes retrieving your profile information from the third-party service to fill and update your AvoMap profile. Additionally, you are allowing us to process activity data from the third-party provider. We will use this data to enhance your experience on AvoMap and to provide you with personalized services.

We process your activity data such as your tracked route and photos you upload.

Our service may utilize anonymized and aggregated data to develop additional features. For example, we can use the aggregated activity data to generate recommendations for routes or create a heatmap.

Please be aware that if you access AvoMap through a third-party tracker, the activity data may include your heart rate information. It is important to note that we are unable to delete this information as it is often embedded within the received activity data.

You can upgrade your personal account and use a premium service of AvoMap (AvoMap Pro). To bring you AvoMap Pro we process your contact- and credit card details.

To improve and to protect our service

Our processing involves collecting and analyzing data on your usage of our service, including the features you utilize, the actions you take, and the frequency, duration, and timing of your usage. Additionally, we retain non-personal information, such as your browser type, computer type, and technical details regarding how you accessed our website. This information assists us in improving our service and promptly identifying and resolving crashes and bugs.

To contact you

We use your information to communicate with you about our service (e.g.: when you’ve forgotten your password), to help you use our service and to update you about our service and share other information we think you like*. We also use your information to respond to you when you contact us. You can manage your contact settings on your profile.

* Healthkit activity data will not be used for this purpose.

What data do we share?

At AvoMap, we do not share or sell personally identifiable information, such as names or email addresses, with other companies for marketing purposes. However, we may share personal information with vendors who perform services on our behalf, such as email communication servers, which require access to users' email addresses for sending emails from our platform. We also work with external services, such as Google Analytics for traffic analysis, to enhance our website and service. These third-party services may use cookies and tracking technologies, and you can refer to their respective privacy policies for more information. In the event of a business transaction, such as a merger or acquisition, or sale of our assets, your personal information may be transferred to the acquiring company. By using our service, you acknowledge and consent to such potential transfers, and that the new entity may continue to process your personal information as described in this Privacy Statement.

We might also share personal information you have provided to us without your consent, in case we believe:

  • it's needed to detect, prevent or address fraud, security or technical issues;
  • it's needed to otherwise protect our property, legal rights, or that of others.

Please be aware that your personal information may be processed outside of the EU. However, we ensure that appropriate data protection measures are in place, such as adhering to the EU-US Privacy Shield framework and having GDPR-compliant Data Processing Agreements with our data-processors. We also have a data retention policy in place, which is explained below, for the removal of personal data stored by our data-processors.

You have the ability to control who can follow you by adjusting your privacy settings. If your account is set to public, your profile page and activities can be viewed by anyone on the platform.

How do we protect your personal data?

Data protection

Ensuring the security of your personal data is of utmost importance to us, and we take all necessary measures to prevent unauthorized access, alteration, distribution, destruction, or misuse of such information. We work closely with our Data Protection Officer to maintain a focus on transparency and safety in our handling of personal data.

Data retention

We retain data for the duration required to provide our service. However, we delete all personal information associated with your account if it has been inactive for 48 months, or upon account deletion.

Backups

We conduct regular backups of our data to ensure the reliability of our service. However, it is not feasible to guarantee the complete deletion of personal data from these backups. If data restoration is necessary from a backup, any personal data restored will be deleted in accordance with our data retention policy as soon as possible.

Third party data

You have the option to disconnect third-party accounts (such as Garmin), which will halt the processing of data for any future activities. Any data provided by these third parties while connected is stored and processed similarly to other AvoMap data. To completely remove this data, please refer to the "How can I see, modify, or delete my personal data?" section below. AvoMap offers an Application Programming Interface (API) that allows for easy data sharing between AvoMap and third-party applications of your choice. We will only share your data with third-party applications if you explicitly authorize them to do so. Any data use by third-party applications that access your data stored on AvoMap on your behalf is subject to the relationship between you and the third party (e.g., their privacy policy). AvoMap is not responsible for these third-party applications or how they process your data.

How can I see, modify, or delete my personal data?

To view and modify some of your data, as well as your preferences and notification settings, you can simply log in to your account. However, if you wish to withdraw your consent for the processing of your activity, user and usage data as described in the "Why we process personal data" section, we will no longer be able to provide our service to you. Therefore, to revoke your consent, you will need to delete your account. If you wish to access, export, or delete all of your personal data, you can send an email to hello@avomap.com.cc. We will respond to your request within 30 days and take necessary actions accordingly.

Photos and videos

When you request to delete your personal data or delete your account, please note that we will delete all the personal data we have stored on our servers. However, we cannot delete any information that you have publicly shared, such as videos that you have shared on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram. Additionally, we cannot delete any local copies of your videos that you or anyone with whom you have shared your videos might have.
